ON THE ROAD: Cuba

In 1990 the writer Robert Palmer and I proposed a project to Rolling Stone Magazine to do a road trip through Cuba in search of the roots of African music amongst the various communities we were planning to encounter. We set out from Havana for a week of amazing discoveries. Bob’s knowledge of the history of Cuban music and it’s roots led is into the inner sanctums of famed musicians, and culminated on the Southern coast of the country at the annual Carnival in Santiago de Cuba.
