EGYPT: People and Places
Since Katzenstein was a child Egypt always had an air of mystery and adventure, from remote desert oases to ancient pyramids. In the 1980s and 90s he made four trips, each time visiting different parts of the country. He also began studying the Arabic language so that he could stay in remote villages, with the intent of documenting the daily life of families in public and private moments. Another challenge was how to photograph the famous monuments in different and interesting ways, attempting to break down visual stereotypes.
