Guatemala
GUATEMALA - While traveling through the Guatemalan highlands documenting the daily life of the indigenous cultures I came to the town of Panajachel, on the shores of Lake Atitlan, en route between the colonial city of Antigua and the market town of Chichicastenango. The lake, surrounded by volcanoes on its southern shore, is one of the most beautiful bodies of water in the world. I embarked by boat to visit the local Mayan villages and to learn of the sordid and painful past that enveloped this region during previous years. It was difficult to imagine such hardship to people and place in such a beautiful and peaceful setting.
