THERESIENSTADT: Memories of Hell
A visit to this concentration camp, located an hour northwest of Prague, Czech Republic, is a surreal and disturbing experience. In 2004 Katzenstein spent a day wandering around the former military fortress, trying to imagine what horrors the Jews who were brought to this ghetto and concentration camp experienced, under the guise of a special place to parade foreign dignitaries around as a model camp. Tens of thousands died within its walls and many more were deported to Auschwitz. The images tell a story of the horrid human experience with the absence of people. Pain, sorrow and death pervaded every stone, every street and every building.
