SCHOOLY D: Welcome to America
In 1993 Katzenstein was given the assignment by Sony Music to spend three days with rapper Schooly D photographing in his North Philadelphia neighborhood for his upcoming album release Welcome to America. This was not to be a typical music project. North Philadelphia was known at the time to be one of the most dangerous and volatile neighborhoods in the country. With School D’s guidance Katzenstein experienced the breadth of urban desolation while at the same time seeing hope through music and tight family bonds. Many males of adult age were absent due to incarceration, and drugs, alcohol and prostitution were evident on most street corners. But Schooly D surrounded himself with childhood friends, hung out in his mother’s house and walked his young son to school. Welcome to America.
